Trees in Texas bloom after month of rain and cooler temperatures

Trees in Houston, Kingwood, The Woodlands, Humble and other cities in the Texas gulf coast are showing signs of revival after this summer’s damaging drought.

The Texas Forestry Service reported this week that the state lost a staggering 500 million trees to the drought.

Texas tree experts say weeks of lower temperatures and a few inches of rainfall have allowed the trees and flowers to bloom again.

Louis Flory, Houston arborist and owner of Ability Tree Experts said nobody should be surprised by this development.

“This should not surprise anyone. It is a good thing. We need more days of heavy rainfall. That should help the trees revive quickly,” he said.

“The trees are blooming again after this summer drought. The trees in Houston and other Texas cities are resilient. Though we have lost millions of trees, more rainfall should help contain the damage,” he added.

Looking around and gesturing towards some blooming flowers, Flory said the cooler weather in Texas has allowed most of the trees and other plants to come back to life.

“We have had some cool nights and warm days. The good thing is that the days are not as hot as they were in the summer. This has been very helpful for the trees and flowers. The result is what you are seeing everywhere,” he said.

“The colors are coming back. This summer was just devastating and it feels really good to see all these colors,” he added.

From Kingwood to other cities in Texas, it is evident trees are coming back to life.

Horticulturist Greg Grant agrees. "Folks here don't realize how blessed we are to be able to grow so many species of flowers," he said.

Flory cautioned homeowners in Houston and other Texas cities not to assume that tree loss is over because of the cooler weather and additional rainfall.

“It is still possible for most Texas homeowners to lose their trees especially if the trees are still very young. Their chances of the younger trees surviving have definitely improved but you still have to watch them carefully for diseases and pest,” he added.

The Houston arborist said homeowners should remove dead trees immediately to avoid attracting pests and diseases.

“Unless the dead trees are removed quickly, they will attract pests and diseases. These pests will attack healthy trees that are nearby. Homeowners will then have bigger tree loss if that happens,” he said.
